Quench Protection Considerations for CESR Superconducting IR Quadrupoles

چکیده
ta = Max tar , tal ( ); tar = a2 − a1 2vr ; tal = l 2vz (3) In these equations, L is the magnet's inductance, Jop is the overall current density in the coil before the quench, A is the wire area, vr is the radial quench velocity, vz is the longitudinal quench velocity, l is the length of the magnet, and a1 (a2) is the inner (outer) coil radius. Relations for the quench velocities are given in ref. [2]. The energy deposited in the coil is related to the resulting coil temperature θ by the following phenomenological relation, which defines F1: I ∫ dt A = F1 θ θ1 (4)

Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles for CESR Phase-III Upgrade
The CESR Phase-III upgrade plan includes very strong permanent magnet quadrupoles in front of the cryostat for the superconducting quadrupoles and physically as close as possible to the interaction point. Together with the superconducting quadrupoles, they provide tighter vertical focusing at the interaction point. The quadrupoles are built with Neodymium Iron Boron (NdFeB) material and operate...
متن کاملRHIC IR Quadrupoles and Field Quality State of the Art in Superconducting Accelerator Magnets
The interaction region (IR) quadrupoles [1] for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) [2] are the best field quality superconducting magnets ever built for any major accelerator. This field quality is primarily achieved with the help of eight tuning shims [3] that remove the residual errors from a magnet after it is built and tested. These shims overcome the limitations from the typical to...
متن کاملReal-world Sorting of Rhic Superconducting Magnets
During the seven-year construction of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), more than 1700 superconducting dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles, and multi-layer correctors have been constructed and installed. These magnets have been sorted at several production stages to optimize their performance and reliability. For arc magnets, priorities have been put first on quench performance and opera...
متن کاملCBN 99-16 CESR PERFORMANCE and UPGRADE STATUS
The CESR electron-positron collider operates with nine trains of closely spaced bunches stored in each beam. During the Fall of 1998 the number of bunches in each of the trains was increased from three to four and the spacing of the bunches reduced from 28ns to 14ns. A beam current of 550mA was supported by two single cell superconducting cavities and two 5-cell copper cavities. We measured a p...
متن کاملCBN 95 - 18 1 Interaction Region Optimization for CESR Phase III
The space around the interaction region is some of the most highly utilized due to its importance to both CESR and CLEO. It is therefore desirable to try to optimize the design of the components in that space to a greater extent than is usually done for accelerator systems. In this paper I describe an optimization of the CESR portion of interaction region I developed and used to generate the sp...
